ABOUT FORD PART NUMBERS
Even though the Ford part numbering system is the best there is, it can be confusing.
Some part numbers from the 1930’s are correct up through 1964, full sized Ford part numbers fit Falcon, Mustang and even Mercury, again, the most important thing to know is the part number you are looking for. For older cars, reproductions of the parts manuals are available and links will be provided on our website to assist you in finding them, they are a must when restoring a vintage car and we suggest you invest in the parts manual for the specific car you are working on.
You will have people tell you, for instance, that all the parts you need for your 1965 Mustang begin with C5ZZ, although C5ZZ is the correct prefix for many parts for a 1965 Mustang, many other parts for the 1965 Mustang begin with prefixes other than C5ZZ and C5ZZ parts may also fit full sized Fords, Falcons and Comets. This is why it is so important to have the parts book you need for the car you are working on, this way when you are looking for the power window control switch for your 1971or 1972 Mustang you’ll know it is a C9AZ 14529 B switch you want and you won’t be wasting time looking for a D1ZZ or D2ZZ 14529 switch which doesn’t exist.
For late model Fords, contact your Ford dealer with your VIN number and your needs and they will give you the part number, even though they no longer carry the part. Even if they have the part still in stock, you may want to search our website to save yourself money.
It is important to remember while reading the description for any item, to save space we have used the Ford application codes in the description box to help you know what car the part fits.
Do not confuse this with the Ford part number prefix code, for instance the part number prefix code for Mustang is ZZ, but the Ford application code for Mustang is F, the part number prefix for Falcon is DZ but the Ford application code is X. For example, the description box on the website may show that a C1DZ6600A oil pump is for the 1961-1966 144, 170, 200 engine a,b,f,x. This would be deciphered as 1961-1966 144, 170, 200 engine in the full sized Ford (a), Fairlane (b), Mustang (f) and Falcon (x). The Ford application codes for the 1950’s through the 2000’s are as follows: |

Here's a tip: Deciphering Ford Part Numbers.
Because the pre 2000 Ford part numbers use a code it makes searching for a part number easy…as long as you stick to the code.
The first letter of the part number is the decade of the application (for the most part) B is 1950’s, C is 1960’s, D is 1970’s, E is 1980’s and F is 1990’s.
The second place is a number, NOT a letter which means you need to enter a number, not a letter, in other words 1961 would be C1, 1962 would be C2.
The third place is a letter, NOT a number and should be an A, O, S, U, T, X, Z etc.
Now here’s the only place you can goof up…when searching a part, remember, be sure to use an “O” for the letter O and a “0” (zero) for the number 0 (example: Do NOT use DOOZ6600A, instead use D0OZ6600A and do NOT use C20Z17262A instead use C2OZ17262A) . Also, for this website, do NOT use a space or dash within the part number (example: Do NOT use 79-10094, instead use 7910094)
Other codes used on the website are as follows:
